The intended purpose of this project is to provide my classmates and I with a window to the outside world. Having been stuck at home for the past 6 months has taken a toll on many of us as we have forgotten what it means to go outside and explore. Although this is not an accurate representation of a city like New York City, Dubai, or the City of London, I have taken inspiration from each of these locations to develop a fusion, or dream, of what a hybrid between these three wonderful places would look like. This will help my classmates in our trek through remote learning by boosting our esteem and energy through having something to look towards to and remind us of the "good 'ol days." Additionally, with a pedestal for an extra screen (which has been proven to boost productivity) and an assortment of slots for pens/pencils (even Apple, Wacom, or Surface pens!), USB sticks (both Type A and Type C), SD Cards and much more, this desk organizer is prepared to take on these new times.
What issues did you come up against?
One issue that I had to face was figuring out the best way to bring the outside to the inside. One of the biggest disturbances during this quarantine was not being able to go outside and explore the beautiful New York City. As I began looking through pictures on my Facebook timeline, I was reminded of the good old days when I explored New York and various corners of Europe like Madrid, Istanbul, Dublin, and Berlin. This brought back a feeling of nostalgia and pumped some adrenalin into my blood. It was at that moment that I realized the best way to bring the outside to the inside is to develop a representation or diorama of various famous cities. I chose three of the most iconic cities – New York City, Dubai, and the City of London – and went straight to the Part Studio.
If you could redesign this again what would you change?
If I could redesign this, I would fix the ‘Subway Bridge’ that runs along with the backdrop. I would take the time to add in some iconic aboveground NYC subway stations – such as Astoria Boulevard Station – in addition to the underground station entrance that holds one of two SD Cards. Other than that, I am satisfied with the design of other aspects like the Towers and Ferris Wheel.
How would 3D printing help strengthen your design?
3D printing would strengthen my design by giving me the ability to produce some of these models for my fellow classmates and boost their mood along with productivity during remote learning. In addition, having access to a production-ready printer would allow me to resolve any minor design flaws and make this model better adjusted to the limitations of current fabrication. This would mean that not only could I print it, but the model could be adjusted to print on more coarse settings for a larger turn out rate OR to allow printability on more common and affordable printers.
