Found a little problem with the left front skid on a Vision + coming in to the field of view. That does not happen on my other carbon fiber skid because it is closer to the camera. It might not happen on a standard vision because that camera is more centered.
Still the most stable skid around because of the wide stance front to rear and side to side. Light, low drag. Still need to do some test compared to my other designs.
I recommend using 7-7.5" carbon fiber rods or tube for the skids.
3.5: .078" carbon rod or tube for the two antennas, and 4-4.5" for the compass mount.
You can view skid mount being made here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yADLJQopxuo
Rev 11/11/14: added new assembly drawing, new shortened mount for .078 (~2mm) rod for the two antenna locations, and round foot pads which do not need aligning like flat foot pads.
Rev 11/07/14:
Revised both compass mounts.
Added compass mount instruction in Gallery pics.
Revised 11/05/14:
Added optional stock compass mount adapter.
You can use your stock clamp to mount your compass module.
Align the flat on the adapter front and rear. SEE GALLERY
The compound angle will only work one way, eg, it will go on upside down. If you cannot align it to +Z and +X (up and front) on your drone, you have probably put it on upside down.
If someone with the new shielded compass module give me some dimensions I will create a mount for that one also.
This design used two of the four motor mount screws to mount a carbon fiber rod skid. The two screws must be longer than the stock ones. They are M3 x .5 x 12mm. Home depot carries them in packs of three, sku 195 943, UPC 887480027181. You will need eight. (The prop guards use the same screws).
You will need four mounting brackets, and three to go where the stock feet attached for the compass mount and the two antennas.
They are a little bit beefier than need be but I used the parts from my other skid design. You will need 3 4" (100mm) .125" (3.175mm) carbon fiber rods to mount the compass mount and for the two antenna wires. You will need 4 .125" x 6.625" long carbon fiber rods for the legs. That will give you about 2" clearance for a Vision 2 +. You can adjust the length as you see fit.
The leg mounts all have pin holes for using a quick disconnect, but you can just press fit the legs or glue them if you do not want that feature.
See the ISO drawing for placement. The compass mount goes on the right rear leg and its mounting face must be aligned parallel to the vehicle front to rear centerline. If not you will have stabilization issues. SEE GALLERY
The motor mounts were designed to fit the motors with the offset screw pattern. I do not know if Phantom 1 motors are the same, or the newer Phantom 2s with the new motors. I do not have either of those, so let me know.
The antenna and compass mounts are heavier than they need to be, but they will work. I will design something more elegant and lightr in the future. While the compass mount needs something more sturdy, a tube instead of a rod might be better, and I am thinking the two antennas could use something along the lines of small straws or coffee stirrers.
There are some optional feet included (_skid_pad) They would probably be good for dirt, but these work fine on a hard flat landing pad.
