They say diamond last forever, but how long is forever? Not even this statement is true because according to the reaction:
C(diamond) ----> C(graphite)
deltaH for this reaction is negative.
So this reaction is trying to happen! However since this reaction takes so LONG to happen (ie. the sun would have to turn into a red giant and implode on itself before we'd ever see a diamond spontaneously turn into graphite) that I guess we can say they last forever.
