Founder of the department store chain was the German-Jewish merchant and department store operator Leonhard Tietz.. The traditional Chemnitzer building was built in 1912 and 1913 opened as the largest and most luxurious department store of his time in Saxony. During the pogrom night of 1938, the department store by the so-called german 'Arisierung' of the Nazis has been operated since 1933, victims of the Nazi dictatorship. After 9 November 1938 was it closed. After the war it was from 1949 until the turn of the GDR in 1989, the largest department store in Karl-Marx-Stadt. Until 2001 it was run by the Kaufhof AG, which have now directly next to it as 'Galeria Kaufhof' re-established a new glass palace. Today's GALERIA Kaufhof GmbH comes from the West German Kaufhof AG, formerly Leonhard Tietz AG. Today the building is a cultural center that is operated by the city. It includes inter alia the Museum of Natural History, the New Saxon Gallery, adult education and the public library.
