Dark Star

This is a 3d build of the 'Dark Star,' a spaceship that appeared in John Carpenter's 1974 sci-fi comedy of the same name. The film's tagline was 'A Spaced Out Odyssey' and it parodied many themes from Stanley Kubrick's earlier '2001.' The Dark Star was on a 20-year mission to destroy 'unstable planets' that threatened human colonies with its payload of semi-trailer-sized world-vaporizing bombs. The crew consisted of Lt. Doolittle, Sgt. Pinback, Boiler, and Talby, as well as the dead captain Cmdr. Powell, who was kept in cryogenic suspension but could mentally communicate with the crew. Between bombing runs, the crew deals with abject boredom, silly pranks and weird hobbies, including taking care of an alien beachball mascot that gets loose and runs amok aboard the ship. Panic ensues when the ship encounters an electromagnetic storm that damages the main computer and starts a series of events that activates 'Bomb #20' whose belligerent HAL-like A.I. begins contemplating its existence and refuses to drop from the bomb bay. Eventually it believes it is God and decides to create its own big bang by saying 'Let there be light!' and exploding while still attached to the ship. The Dark Star was a rather simple spoon-shape design that doesn't have any visible engines. The means of propulsion was not explained. The transparent dome on top contains an egg-chair observation seat where Talby spent most of his time daydreaming.
