This is a model of a small ZOETROPE, an early animation device developed in the 1800s, that allows to watch 3-D animated mini-scenes
the drum has 16 slots that allow to look at 16 scenes, which can be either 2-d drawings or 3-D objects inside the drum, on the opposite side.
the images or physical objects are drawn or arranged in a looped animated sequence (like a 16-frames animated gif)
when the drum is rotating (on the turntable) if you look directly at the sequence, everything is blurred. However, by looking through the slits, the eye sees only one 'scene' at the time for a fraction of time and thus, because of PERSISTENCE OF VISION, it looks like the scene is animated.
the ghostly carousel DRUM has both slots along the walls to insert 16 2-D drawings, or a circular slot on the bottom to insert a connector for 3-D object animation.
the BASIC ROUND BASE has multiple holding 'holes' at different distances from the center of the slot, to allow fine tuning of the object positioning (left-right-front-back)
the SWIVEL BASE has a ball-joint that allows free movement in all directions
the LEGO BASE allows the placement of Lego's Mini-figurines to have them 'dance', 'jump' or 'move' around
the CONNECTORS are in different length, but they can be substituted by any piece of 1.75 filament for easier assembly
the GHOSTLY characters are simple 3-D modeled ghosts, with the eyes in 4 slightly different positions, plus one winking, to allow the Ghostly to shift his eyes or wink as it hovers around
-the PIVOT fits into the central hole and allows to spin the carousel without using a turntable
Everything is sized to be printed on a small 10x10x10 printer, and to fit on the inside label of an LP. however, this leaves little space for the animations, which thus have to be rather small.
if you have access to a larger printer, printing everything at 1.5x (or even larger) would allow for much better composition and viewing (the only piece that would stop working as planned would be the Lego adaptor.
The included Ghostlies move around nicely (see movie), but some of the details are hard to catch (like the shifty eyes).
we printed everything in black and the ghosts in white, with black filament pieces to make them 'fly'. It's possible that printing it all in white might allow better viewing because the object will be in a brighter space
all files are separate so you can decided how many of each you want to print
