Warning: I've been told (see comments) that this isn't stable at lower latitudes. It's fine in the UK at 55 degrees but not Sydney at 33 degrees. I'll look at how to extend the legs.
I didn't fancy the jar approach, and didn't care for any of the other stands that I found, so I designed one. The base shape comes from a lamp (but moved to OpenSCAD myself) and the pivot I just invented. I like the look but SCAD file included so feel free to modify.
Sundial is connected with M6x20 bolt and a captive nut. Hinge tension is set with M3x35 bolt, nut and washer. Of course, use stainless steel if you want to use the compass hole. No one would be so stupid as to try non-stainless and wonder what was going wrong, oh no!
[Update 2018-03-24]
Thanks for Toermentor22 for spotting an issue with the pivot. It was a small bug in my OpenSCAD to do with removing part of the upright. I think it would only show up if doing 0.1mm 1st layer but probably depends on slicer. Anyway, now fixed.
