Commercial Bank of Tasmania 1907, Launceston

Built as the Commercial Bank of Tasmania in 1907 by the local construction group J & T Gunn, this beautiful and iconic Edwardian building exchanged hands a few times over the years but remained a bank until only the most recent years. The English Scottish Bank and the Australian Bank owned the building between 1921 and 1970 until it was last occupied by the Australian and New Zealand Bank (ANZ). Currently the building serves as a sports equipment retailer on the 1st floor (ground level) with separate companies and offices occupying all levels above except for the elevator winch house which now forms the building's highest point. The building is built from brick but has a facade made from imported sandstone which makes some of the facade wall nearly a meter thick in places. Prior to 1907, a single level Georgian corner shop occupied the site which was adjacent to the 3 story Criterion Hotel which was demolished in the 1970s to make the building now next door on St John Street. Originally, the 2 turrets facing St John Street were intended to support 2 large domes clad in sheet metal (similar to that on the Albert Hall on Tamar Street) but were never built.
