Stone seat placed on Stinchcombe Hill in 1936. Limestone with sculpted, lyre console, armrests. The following dedication is on the round-headed bronze plaque:- 'THIS SEAT WAS ERECTED BY THE INHABITANTS OF DURSLEY AND DISTRICT TO PERPETUATE THE GENEROSITY OF SIR STANLEY TUBBS BART. IN MAKING THIS HILL AND THE SURROUNDING WOODLANDS FREE TO THE PUBLIC FOREVER'. This bequest was made by Sir Stanley in 1922. The location commands grand views in both directions - over the broad sweep of the Severn Valley to the West; and of the Tyndale Monument at Nibley and the narrow Waterley Bottoms valley to the East. The smaller bronze plaque reads:- '195 acres of grassland and 89 acres of Westfield and Sheep Path Woods A.D. 1936'. There is an inscribed Ordnance Survey 'trig point' mark visible on the West side of the seat. #monument #seat #Stinchcombe
