Sicilian defense The Sicilian defense is an opening of the game of chess, played for the first time in the sixteenth century in Italy, characterized by moves: 1. e4 c5 Already mentioned in the treatise by Luis Ramírez de Lucena (Repetión de amores y arte de ajedrez, with CL juegos de partido), in the Göttingen manuscript, in Polerio, and in Gioacchino Greco, the sequence of moves that characterize it is reported in the treatise of Pietro Carrera The game of chess (1617). For more than two centuries, however, this openness was neglected, until Jänisch and Staunton expressed themselves very favorably about him. In the early nineteenth century the English chess player Jacob Sarratt called this opening 'Sicilian defense' in honor of the birthplace of Pietro Carrera. #chess #Sicilian defense #Half-open game
