Since the fire in 1860, the town has swelled to a 25,000 population, and has gained many jobs in a building boom following the introduction of more rail lines, and post fire reconstruction. Main industries include Iron foundries, river-rail transportation, and furniture making. 2 new classes of elite, and poor have also risen, the poor live in dirty neighborhoods by the factories, while the wealthy live in grand townhomes on in places like the new Tremont Avenue. Most of the wealthy work in commercial buildings along the main street, Thomas Avenue. Most of the buildings are townhouses, apartments, factories, and storefronts, which are built in the Italianate and Second Empire architectural styles.
