The Chancellorsville Inn was originally built around 1810, and it was expanded over the next few years. By the 1860s, the Chancellor House was an L-shaped structure with about 30 rooms. In 1862, Confederate troops marched down Rt. 3, passing in front of the inn. It is reported that the Chancellor girls stood on the upstairs balcony and were saluted by the Confederate troops. In 1863, the inn was used as the Northern army general's field headquarters. He was knocked out when a shot hit one of the columns and exploded, but later recovered. A few days later, the inn burned when struck by errant hotshot. It was rebuilt on a smaller scale in the Italianate style (with cupola and porches) but burned again in 1928. The remaining walls collapsed in a storm in the 1930s. The foundations were excavated in 1976. #19th #attack #barn #battle #beige #blaze #blue #brick #caisson #cannon #catwalk #century #chimney #civil #column #Confederate #cream #deck #destruction #Doric #double #fire #frame #hung #metal #North #porch #Rebel #Rebels #red #shutters #slate #South #stone #Tuscan #Union #verandah #Virginia #war #white #window #wood #Yankee #Yankees
