Ship 849 (1990-2012), the 'Clockliner Hawaiian Pearl', served Honolulu airport its entire service life. This 767 was used for several revenue transpacific flights and sightseeing flights around Hawaii. Since Central helped local communites and offered free sightseeing flights to nonprofit organizations and strugling individuals onboard 849, the plane was affectionately called 'Old Number 9' and 'The Big Heart' by the locals and it was very much loved. The plane performed very well for pilots and was nicknamed 'Old Reliable' by them. On August 2nd, 2012, Ship 849 headed out on a routine revenue flight from Honolulu to Hong Kong as Central Air Lines Flight 1638. The airplane was fully loaded with passengers (mainly Chinese citizens). Halfway through the flight, Flight 1638 disappeared from radar along with V2 Airlines Flight 32, a Boeing 777-3VGLR. Due to its fame, several residents of Oahu closely followed the story to Flight 1638's disappearance. When the coast guard arrived, they were faced with the aftermath of the worst aviation accident in history. Flight 1638 and Flight 32 collided in midair, killing all on board both planes besides a single survivor from Flight 32. This tragedy has surpassed Flight 909 in being the second worst plane crash in Central's history. The worst is Flight 6 in 1968. #1638 #300 #300ER #339 #339ER #767 #767300 #767300ER #767339 #767339ER #Air #Boeing #Central #ER #Flight #Lines #N849CL
