The easternmost destination of the White Mountains, Carter Notch Hut is open year round for full-service in the summer, and self-service in the fall, winter, and spring. It's an excellent destination for hikers, skiers, and snowshoers alike, and because it is one of the more accessible huts, it's especially suitable for families and newcomers to the backcountry. Basics Location: Carter Notch between Wildcat Mountain & Carter Dome Elevation: 3,288 feet Access Summer: Moderate 3.8 mile hike. Winter: Moderate snowshoe or ski. View trail access information Adjacent huts: Madison Spring Hut. View map Accommodations Sleeps 40 in two unheated bunkhouses. Coed rooms for four to six people. Summer full-service includes hearty dinner at 6 p.m. and breakfast at 7 a.m., mattress, pillow and three wool blankets on each bunk (bring linens or sleeping bag). Fall, winter and spring self-service includes access to kitchen facilities, mattress, pillow and bathrooms. No blankets are provided (bring sleeping bag.) Main hut building with wood stove lit at 4 p.m. during self service season. Winter water is treated by boiling. Resident caretaker with trail information, weather reports.
