Capoeira is an Afro-Brazilian martial art that has its roots in the fighting techniques of African peoples during the days of slavery in Brazil. It differs from other martial arts by its playful and often acrobatic side. The feet are very much used during the fight although other parts of the body can be used such as, mainly, the hands, the head, the knees and the elbows. The 'players' can take a position in support or in balance on the hands to perform kicks or acrobatics. In various forms, capoeira is played and / or wrestled at different levels of the ground and at different speeds, most often accompanied by instruments, chants and clapping.
