The Cape Neddick Light, built on Nubble Island near Kittery, ME, is a well-known symbol of Maine and the United States. Built in 1878, indoor plumbing was installed in 1938. Located only a few yards from the mainland, a cable car was installed to ferry supplies and people back and forth. During one winter in the 1930s, before the light was electrified, the wind chill became so low that the kerosene in the lamps began to freeze. The lighthouse was automated in 1987 and may be viewed from the park across the channel. #attraction #automate #automated #automation #bay #beacon #boat #destination #fresnel #hampshire #history #house #kittery #lens #light #lighthouse #lightstation #maine #marine #maritime #nautical #new #ocean #portland #portsmouth #safe #safety #sea #ship #signal #sos #states #station #tourism #tourist #united #water
