My friend wanted to borrow a Canadian bee clearer from the local club but unfortunetly they did not have one so I decided to build one.
They are a very effective and rapid way of clearing bees. The cones are not one way valves but the bees are sufficiently disorientated not to be able to find their way back into the supers. However they should not be left on for more than six hours.
you will also need:
460mm x 460mm of 6mm Ply
4 - 440mm x 62mm 20mm slats of wood
16 - 15mm nails
8 - 40mm nails
25mm wood drill bit
Some strong glue
On the 6mm ply board draw a cross between the 4 corner and then mark 200mm from the centre to each corner. Drill 5 x 25mm holes at each of the marked locations.
Nails the 4 slats along the edges of the board using 4 x 15mm nails in each, then nail the ends using the 40mm nails.
Now glue the cones into the holes you drill with the cone inside as per the pictures. they are only £25 to buy on the Thornes website but this has cost me about £1 to make as I had all the bits in my man cave :)
