Byron Green Rogers, my great grandfather, was born in 1889 at the home of his father Lawton Rogers in Bulloch County. Lawton, the son of Ervin G. Rogers and grandson of Thomas Rogers, moved his family to Glennville in 1901. Byron Rogers became one of the most successful planters in southern Tattnall County, owning all the land surrounding his home all the way down to Beards Creek. He married Julia Smiley, of Smiley Crossing, GA, in 1912 and had eight children. His house, which was built here in 1910, was one of the most technologically advanced homes in the area. It was the first house outside of the city limits to have electricity, by means of a Delco generator. My grandmother (his daughter) remembers when all the people for miles around would come over on Saturday nights and listen to the Grand Ole Opry on their radio. The house also featured a large windmill which drew water from a well and supplied the house's water. Byron Rogers died in 1980 after a long, successful farming career. His home on Rogers Road is a standing reminder of the impact he and his descendants have made on the Glennville area over the years. He is buried in the Rogers family plot of the Glennville City Cemetery, which was once one of his fields. When it was sold to the city, the entire southeastern corner was kept for the family. #Georgia #Glennville
