One of the most archetypal components of the kitchen, the grater is a quintessential part of any kitchen. A grater is a tool for food preparation that slices, grinds, and cuts food into shapes, such as strips or bits, so the ingredient can be evenly dispersed into the food being prepared. The sharp blades, panels, and drums used to grate the food are most often stainless steel to keep them from rusting, although plastic composite graters are also available. Graters are available in a variety of types and sizes, generally categorized as: 1) flat hand or rasp graters; 2) flat heavy duty graters; 3) all purpose or box graters; 4) multi-purpose graters; and 5) rotary graters. In this case, I chose to utilize an all purpose grater, as it had a plethora of uses and could be utilized in an endless number of ways. Despite the grater’s incredible efficiency it lacked a key component of the STEAM process, art. Its unappealing and bland appearance creates a distasteful experience, in turn resulting in a monotonous cooking experience.
Standing at 1,053 feet, the Burj Al Arab is the fourth tallest hotel in the world; however, 39% of its total height is made up of non-occupiable space. The Burj Al Arab stands on an artificial island 280 m (920 ft) from Jumeirah beach and is connected to the mainland by a private curving bridge. The shape of the structure is designed to mimic the sail of a ship. It has a helipad near the roof at a height of 210 m (689 ft) above ground. This hotel represents the human instinct to constantly drive innovation and our constant hunger for improvement, hence it was a perfect model to base my grater off as it combines the practicality of a grater with the design and beauty of a luxury seven star hotel pushing the boundaries of design.
