Buffalo City Hall and McKinley Monument

An Art Deco masterpiece, Buffalo City Hall was built in 1931 on the back of the city's prosperity. It is 115 m (398 ft) high and has 26 storeys. Among other decorative features are reliefs, depicting peace, commerce and industry, law and education above the front of the building and Buffalo's history on the west side. The building cost $700,000 and at one stage had a wind-powered air-conditioning system. At the crown of the building is an exhaust vent. The 31 m (96 ft) column in Niagara Square commemorates President William McKinley, assassinated in 1901 at the Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo. The column is of Vermont and Italian marble, flanked by marble lions, and was raised in 1907.
