This is how all five 707-227 aircraft looked like when first delivered to Braniff. Like I mentioned a couple of times before, the JT4A powered 707-227 was a rare plane and all five were constructed for Braniff. This particular 707-227 was the first built for Braniff. N7071 took off on a routine test flight one day in 1959, with a crew of 8 on board, which included many Braniff and Boeing personnel. While performing a Dutch Roll, the plane nearly lost control. After pulling out of the near crash, the overstressed aircraft shed three of its engines, with a fire erupting where number two engine once stood. On only one JT4A and falling fast, the pilots landed on a riverbed east of U.S. Route 99 near Arlington, Washington. Four people were killed and the plane was completely destroyed by the impact. Since Boeing had not delivered the airplane yet, it had to pay for the damages done. The first 707-227 delivered to Braniff was instead N7072. #707 #707100 #707120 #707200 #707220 #707227 #99 #Airways #Arlington #Boeing #Braniff #Crash #Highway #International #N7071 #Pacific #Route #US #Washington
