The principle of operation is based on a needle with a cavity being thrust into the tissue and a second larger needle that is coaxial to the first needle sliding over the cavity. As a result, a small bit of tissue remains in the cavity of the first needle. Biopsy samples are typically necessary when cancer is suspected. They do hurt quite a bit.
