Biogas contains methane (CH4) and carbon dioxide (CO2) as the main ingredients. Besides these main components, hydrogen sulfide (H₂S), ammonia (NH3), nitrogen (N2), hydrogen (H₂) and trace amounts of other gases can be found.

Biological Desulfurization is a system where sulfur bacteria consume Hydrogen Sulfide (H2S) in the system and convert it to sulfuric acid in processes where the oxygen amount is above 2% in practice, or convert it to elemental sulfur in processes where it is between 0.1% and 1% oxygen. Both waste products from the system can be used again as fertilizer or for enrichment of the fertilizer.

In the removal application, the biogas is passed through the tower filled with special filling material. Bacteria clinging to the surfaces in the tower allow hydrogen sulfide (H2S) to break down and oxygen is needed for this reaction. For this reason, oxygen is supplied in the tower in a controlled manner and special nutritional supplements (nutrients) are made to feed the bacteria.

This application and removal process is called Biological Desulfurization or Biological Desulphurization.
