Description:
Our design utilizes a unique bidirectional spiral to store regolith drum will be primarily made of
Aluminum 1060 alloy which due to its high durability and low weight and thermal resistance. We took
inspiration from the structure of snail shells and their helical nature. Regolith is shifted further into the
center of the spiral with each rotation via the force of gravity and expelled when rotated in the opposite
direction. The spiral structure functions as an internal support. Stress tests show minimal deformation
on scoops and drum at forces of 1000 newtons. We chose not to implement a segmented assembly
method due to the intrusive nature of regolith particle.
Future Improvements/Modifications:
This design was created with the assumption that manufacturing and assembly occurs on earth. Future
designs can incorporate a more storage friendly design or different material choices.
