I have searched and searched and never found a good plug for baseball bases, so I designed my own. We have been using a rubber, mushroom head plug for our bases, but the drag we use does not take kindly to those plugs. I tried to design a plug for the bases that could be immune to a drag, but also be visible for when the bases needed to be installed. So I came up with this plug that uses standard weed trimmer string! I wanted to design a plug that required no tools to assemble. From what I have gathered, the only tool you would need is a knife to cut the string if you needed to replace the string later down the road.
There are three different designs here. All of these designs are intended to use standard weed trimmer sting for the "visual" indicator and that is to be feed through the small holes (0.125" diameter). I used 0.110" string for my testing that I purchased from my local hardware store. The two larger holes are intended to be used as a backup pull string and have a diameter of 0.250". I decided not to use them for my field because our drag is prone to catching on looped string for our past plugs.
Design 1 - Single Pull String (Actually two strings) - This design uses one loop of string that in turn creates two strings to pull on.
Design 2 - Single Pull Sting - Looped (Again, actually two strings) - This design uses two loops of string that creates a locking tension on the string so it can't be pulled out by pulling on just one string. Again, this design actually creates two strings to pull one from the top.
Design 3 - Four Pull Strings - This design uses the concept of design 1, but doubles the holes. This will create four pull strings for added visibility when installed in the field.
There are two different sizes included here. The larger ones come in at 1.65" square and will fit a 1.75" hole. The field I used for testing has these for first, second and third bases. The smaller ones come in at 1.55" square which is what was used for a "runners" bag tied to the first base bag. Your runner bags may have a different size than mine. If you are in need of different sizes, please let me know and I can add them for you.
Enjoy, and let me know how well they work for you!
