The Banbury mixer is a tangential internal mixer in which two slightly helical rotors rotate in a short, two-cylinder chamber with adjacent sides. The chamber has a high opening called a funnel that can be closed using pneumatics to insert materials and a lower inlet that can be opened hydraulically to allow the contents to come out after mixing.

Banbury is loaded by lifting the ram completely from the hopper and pouring properly weighted rubber containers to fill the container. The ram is then pressed and the tire is forced to be held in the chamber while needed and the rotor mix. Tire failure is caused by cutting between the rotor blade strips and the rotor walls and between the rotor-rotor, while one rotor works slightly faster than the other to prevent it from sticking to the blade.
