Wood is scarce in Scotland’s Northern Isles and this painted turned wooden bowl from Orkney is one of many items brought across the North Sea by seafarers trading timber from Latvia and surrounding regions in the 19th and early 20th century.

The bowls are commonly termed ‘Baltic Ware’, but in Shetland they are sometimes called Muscovy, Skovi or Kapps (containers for ‘kappit’ things in). Many can be found in homes across the Isles.

Model produce for Cait McCulloch’s project ‘New Connections Across the Northern Isles’.
