At the end of the 19th century, cities everywhere had grown exponentially with the forces of industrialization, and downtowns soon found themselves with no room to go, but up when constructing buildings. The need for space, and the availability of new materials (steel, elavators) allowed for skyscrapers to come into existance, and in 1885, The firsty skyscraper, the Home insurance Building was completed. These new towers were designed in fine classical Beaux arts styles, or the Chicago style (precurser to modernism).
