The Aon Center in Chicago was constructed in 1973 as the Standard Oil Building. At 1136 feet tall, it is the 15th tallest building in the world, and the tallest ‘box’ skyscraper. Originally the exterior was clad with marble, which were not able to withstand the Chicago weather, and soon had to be replaced with granite. The Aon Center has a beauty in its simplicity. The façade is composed of 15 vertical bays of windows, which are divided by a granite detail. This gives the building a smooth look from afar, and still an interesting look up close.
