Edit: 3/17/16: This Thing is no longer supported, and probably isn't used by anyone else, but others can still learn from it.. never underestimate the utility of picatinny rail!
We had a heap of crap with an old mount and multiple sensors and adapters taped to it. As the needs changed, more wood and tape was screwed/glued to it, and old parts were not removed or disconnected. It looked like garbage, and I'm extremely surprised the Air Force (our sponsor) decided to continue funding after showing them that rat's nest (unfortunately I don't have pictures). Even though I am a lowly research assistant (until starting master's next fall!), the PhD student finally decided to take my advice and let me take a crack at designing a new fixture.
Now, we have a new mounting solution for our Aerotech gantry! This will allow a variety of attachments to be used in a clean and modular manner, that will also be more precise than the pile of wood, tape and wires that was there before. The picatinny rail has held my AR-15 accessories on throughout plenty of recoil forces and running around, so I figured it would hold up to forces associated with changing scanning direction. I also already had a picatinny rail modeled for one of my rifles, so I just pasted that onto a mount and voila! Attachments coming soon.
Hopefully if anyone else out there has an Aerotech gantry this will be of some use. I figured it can't hurt to upload it.
