I recently discovered the 100Hex project by tecnoloxia_org and decided I would challenge myself to add a load of customizable hex designs (I've started uploading them here if you want to check them out).
I liked the current frame design, but after printing one, I realised that I would end up using a load of filament just printing the frames. I also had trouble withthe snap-fit connector so decided to work on a quick solution.
Instead of printing an entire frame, just the main parts are included. You can print the hex with a base and change layers on height or just use card/paper to fill the back (which makes it easier to draw on/add color). I've used cheap recycled black card that I picked up for cheap on ebay, it's held in by the hex when it's fitted.
Rather than printing snap-fit connecters or a frame thick enough to fit a screw hole, there is holes for cotton string. You can simply tie the frames together and then use a bit of string to hang it on a nail or screw.
Thanks to the original creators! There is no way I would of had the idea for this without them.
According to cura:
This version:
11g
Just over 1.5 hours
Original:
31g
3 Hours, 45 mins
and for each connector:
2g
16 mins
As per the original, you may find it better to scale this slightly. I find everything fits together perfectly if I print the frame at 100.1% width & length (or the hexes at 99.9%). It will depend on your printer and filament so print a test before you go wild!
The hexes in the images are:

100hex portal by 2CoB9
The torus is from the original 100Hex, I believe it was made by tecnoloxia_org
