This Zoe-trope uses one of the oldest mechanical solutions for the movie industry, the Maltese cross, also referred to as the Geneva wheel. It was used in camera's and projectors, to rapidly move the celluloid from one picture to the next. Since we don't have our pictures on celluloid, we print them on a CD. Ten pictures per movie.
Every step, ten slightly different pictures rotate 36 degrees and give the impression of motion. If you don't want to draw pictures yourself, you can find plenty of them in the Internet. To get the right size, paste them in Word, click right and set the width at 12 cm.
The gear wheels were defined with the excellent and very simple to use gear wheel generator at http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:900277/#files
An interesting article on the Geneva wheel (Maltese cross) can be found athttp://kmoddl.library.cornell.edu/tutorials/10/
