This is a very detailed 3d topo of Yosemite Valley's Cathedral Spires. The model is so detailed that you can clearly see the ledge on the classic climbing route on Lower Cathedral Spire.
I made it from a LIDAR dataset collected to study nitrogen export and made available on http://opentopo.sdsc.edu/. The LIDAR point cloud was gridded to a 0.5m resolution.
You can see my tutorial video at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t4-ICkvyJv0
The print took 22 hrs. It was sliced with Simplify3d at default high quality settings and printed in PLA on a FlashForge. It was printed with 6 shells, no infill and no bottom. Those trees take an incredible amount of time to print.
If you want a model of the entire Cathedral Rocks area see http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:285886
This thing was featured on the 3D Printing Today podcast available on iTunes, Stitcher radio or direct from the source at http://threedprintingtoday.libsyn.com/
