Xebec Pirate Ship

My second ship model, this one is MUCH smaller and less detailed, but still a challenge. Modeled after the galleys used by Barbary Coast corsairs in the Mediterranean, (and then adopted and used by French ad Spanish naval forces) this distinctive ship style has a forward and main mast canted forward, each with a single long spar to hold the lateen rigged sail. This, along with a shallow draft, makes it extremely fast and maneuverable. However, these ships were not the most stable or durable, and could not hold very large cannon. I followed the rule here by arming it with 22x12lb guns but bent history a little by adding a long range 42lb 'Long Tom' used by gunboats in the 19th century. This gun sits centered amidships on a rotating pivot, and can cause a lot of damage across long distances. The best part about the age of sail is the variety and diversity of all kinds of naval craft. Each has its own strengths and weaknesses and its own unique history and development. My goal is to create my own naval armada and showcase it here.
