Three aircraft were built: X-15-1, X-15-2 and X-15-3. The X-15-2 was redesignated X-15A-2 after a crash landing, repairs, and modifications to lengthen the fuselage by 29 inches and to provide additional fuel tanks. After 199 flights, on October 24, 1968, the NASA X-15 program was terminated. The information obtained from the X-15 contributed greatly to the development of the space shuttle and high-speed fixed-wing aircraft.
