North American Aviation X-15A-2 • 'Down' landing gear position fixed 14 July 2011 • B-52 attachment points added 16 August 2009 • Horizontal stabilizers fixed 09 July 2009 • (NOTE: LARGE FILE 9Mb - Extensive detail) • Full-scale model • No texture images used • Dimensions exhaustively researched to enable building scale model • In 1955, North American Aviation won the contract for hypersonic (5X speed-of-sound) aircraft capable of Mach 7 and a ceiling of 50 miles. Three aircraft were built: X-15-1, X-15-2 and X-15-3. The X-15-2 was redesignated X-15A-2 after a crash landing, repairs, and modifications to lengthen the fuselage by 29 inches and to provide additional fuel tanks. After 199 flights, on October 24, 1968, the NASA X-15 program was terminated. The information obtained from the X-15 contributed greatly to the development of the space shuttle and high-speed fixed-wing aircraft. The X-15A-2 currently resides at the Air Force Museum at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, near Dayton, Ohio. #aircraft #airplane #NASA #North_American_Aviation #research #rocket #rocket_plane #space #USAF #x15 #x15a2 #xplane
