I set out to make a differential to understand how it allows an axle rotate at different speeds. It's my learning process and this open model helps show how a differential works. When printed and assembled together the pinion shaft(engine input) rotates causing the ring gear to rotate as well. In turn rotating the output shafts which go to the wheels. If one output shaft is held in place, and the input shaft is spinning the opposite shaft will still spin. Excellent model to show how it works as well as why a regular differential is bad for any offroading or winter conditions. If a wheel is on ice and the other wheel locked in place in some snow, the result will be all the rotational velocity diverted to the wheel on ice.
I hope you enjoy the model as I worked hard on it- learning CAD (solidworks)
any tolerances that don't work correctly please leave a comment.
You know your printer better than me- that being said I would still print the gears at 0.1mm layer height.
none of these prints required supports.
I would not recommend printing the stand in ABS- unless you got it down to a science.
also on the stand if you are printing at greater layer height i would include supports so the shaft holes print nicely.
