This wind vane is built around the AS5048B magnetic rotary encoder. The wind vane is very light and is intended to go on top of a model sailboat mast. Initial testing showed that the vane is accurate, stable, and responsive to very light wind.
The AS5048 chip is an excellent choice for this application since it allows for 0.02 degree resolution and can be sampled at a high rate with an I2C interface. I found that in this setup, sub-degree repeatability was easily attainable. Hopefully this tutorial and files will make it easier for you to implement the same and make a cool weather station or sailboat!
The model was built in Fusion 360 and can be downloaded from this link: https://a360.co/3drYly9. Happy hacking!
