A sword of a viking or early medieval type, inscribed on one side with IN NOMINE DOMINI (In the name of the Lord), and on the other IONUS ME FECIT (Jon made me). The hilt and the brazil-nut shaped pommel are based mainly on an ULFBERHT sword from about 1000 a.d., apparently found in Spain. The hilt is of a nordic type, classified as type X in Petersens typology, and Xa Oakeshotts', this type would likley reimain popular until the 1200s. The long crossguard type was called 'gaddhjalt' or spike-hilt by the vikings, and the type would become very popular later during the middle ages. The blade would have been made western or central Europe, perhaps in Bavaria or the Rhinelands as many of the best viking swordblades were. The inscriptions are iron inlay and are based on several examples of similar phrases on similar blades. The blade is pattern-welded, hence the pattern on the fuller, this type of pattern may be the one refered to as 'blodida', or blood eddy, in the nordic sagas. #historical #inscribed #medieval #middle_ages #Sword #viking
