This espresso distribution tool is designed to be used with the La Pavoni manual-piston espresso machine and similar 48mm portafilter machines. The tool is used to help distribute the loose coffee grounds in the portafilter, which occurs after dosing but before tamping.
When spun in a CW direction, the coffee is gently (the tool should be used lightly) brushed CW by the gentle slope built into the side of each of the three vanes on the face of the tool. The three vanes, being perfectly flat and of large cross-section, rides on top of the finished surface without sinking in.
There is an adjustment mechanism built into the design, as the distribution tool screws into the outer body. This outer body is meant to ride on top of the portafilter basket's rim preventing any overpacking of the grounds. To adjust, simply turn the central part proud of the outer body until its protrusion matches the depth of the distributed grounds below the portafilter basket's rim.
There should be ample space remaining in the tool body to insert weights as desired. (Commercial distribution tools are quite heavy and weighted.)
Included with this design is a portafilter funnel also designed to match the La Pavoni and other 48mm baskets. Ridges are built into the side of the funnel to help support its somewhat thin sides, but does double duty as it engages in matching features designed into the distribution tool's handle where it nests when not in use in storage.
Furthermore the funnel also nests onto my subsequently designed tamping stand, which can be found here: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:3031801
