The BAOFENG (and clones) budget radio benefits from some matching budget speaker-mics available from online auction sites. Unfortunately although the jacks fit well, it only needs a small lateral force on the jack to create a poor connection. This results in poor, intermittent or no operation of the device.
After messing about with several fixes including using rubber bands and glue to support the jack in the correct place I finally designed a proper bracket to support the speaker-mic cable. It holds the cable in such a way as to prevent lateral forces from disconnecting it thus maintaining a good connection.
