USS Yankton

This is my rendition of a ship similar to the USS Yankton. The Yankton, originally named 'Penelope' was a steel-hulled schooner built in 1893 by the Ramage & Ferguson shipbuilding company. According to Charles Armstrong, who was Medical Officer of the Yankton in 1918, the Penelope had been originally been an extravagant yacht of a well-known French actress. The ship was commissioned between May 16, 1898 to February 27, 1920 and was outfitted as a gunboat during her service in the Spanish-American War. From 1907 to 1909, the Yankton sailed with the Great White Fleet as a member of the auxiliary section.
