Submarine Turtle was a develop in 1775 by the american inventor and patriot David Bushnell as combat ready submersible vehicle intended to sink british ships in the harbour. This one-man submarine was was driven by a pedal device connected to a propeller. There was also a vertical propeller powered by a hand crank. Submerging and emerging was controlled by filling water into the ballast tanks at the bottom of the submarine and its subsequent depletion by a pair of manual pumps. Combat device consisted of an external charge, which should be attached to a manually operated drill, which was to penetrate the shell contested ship. Although the first assignment failed since the hull of targeted ship HMS Eagle was immpossible to penetrate, submarine Turtle was the first known example of using a submersible vessels to for combat. Our model represents one possible reconstruction of this famous vessel. I hope you will enjoy it and use it to many projects, historical as well as fantastical.
