I found this genius design by @2ROBOTGUY and printed two before I figured out why the hinge is so difficult to get a smooth action.
I did three fixes:
1) removed the tray. It was separated by a tiny gap, but my printer merged it. First I removed it with a saw, then I used blender. ;-)
2) Added a perimeter ledge to the hinge pin so it clicks in and won't come out. Make sure that the inside of the ring and the hinge pin are de-burred and smooth before you put them together because it requires squeezing the split pin to remove it. Apply some cooking oil or something non-synthetic smelling to lubricated it.
3) the ring of the hinge was overlapping with the edge of the base tube. So it was squeezing the hing pin, and not allowing a gap between the base and the hing pin. So if you spread the split as @2ROBOTGUY says, it scrapes and binds on the base tube. So I pulled the ring away from the tube, leaving a gap between the pin and the base tube.
The mice would get caught but could pull the door open. So I hot melt glued some strong magnets to the outside edge of the tube and the matching on the door so that it would be difficult for a mouse to open.
I set several at a time in my attic. I have caught about four mice so far.
Give me feedback if you do anything!
