The John S. Thompson Bridge in Grave, the Netherlands. Named after the platoon commander who captured this bridge. Thompson landed with his men some 700 yards from the south side of the bridge. They proceeded through the ditches towards the bunker, which was still occupied by some Germans and a 20 mm AA gun. After firing a couple of bazooka rounds the bunker was taken, as was the south side of the bridge. The 20mm gun was trained on the far side of the river and took out some lorry borne infantry in the process. Later that day the north side was taken by other paratroopers. Built in 1929 the bridge is now painted in a rainbow pattern, from red on the Brabant side to green on the north or Gelderland side. #arnhem #grave #holland #market_garden #nijmegen #ww2
