Victory day is a national holiday in Bangladesh celebrated on 16 December to commemorate the defeat of the Pakistan Armed Forces in the Bangladesh Liberation War in 1971 and the Independence of Bangladesh.

The National Martyrs' Memorial (Bengali: জাতীয় স্মৃতিসৌধ Jatiyo Sriti Soudho) is the national monument of Bangladesh, built to honour and remember those who died during the Liberation War in 1971, which resulted in Bangladesh's independence. The monument is located in Savar, about 35 km north-west of the capital, Dhaka. It was designed by Syed Mainul Hossain and built by Concord Group.

Seven pairs of triangular-shaped walls, or prisms, make up the architecture; the outermost pair is the smallest in height but widest in spread; the inner pairs gradually alter their aspect ratio, and the innermost pair therefore serves as the building's peak point. Each of these seven wall pairs symbolizes a pivotal moment in Bangladesh's history: the Language Movement of 1952; the United Front's victory in the 1954 province elections; the Constitution Movement of 1956; the East Pakistan Education Movement of 1962; the Six Point Movement of 1966; the Mass Uprising of 1969; and, last but not least, the Liberation War's final battle in 1971, which resulted in Bangladesh's independence and sovereignty.
