In 1880, the construction of these 55 meters high tower in the western dunes of Ameland have started. It is the last lighthouse which have been desined by Q Harder. The lighthouse has been founded on granite block-systems. The tower got directly rotating light of 1st size and it light was the first clustered flickering light in the Netherlands with a cluster of 3 flickering in 30 seconds. In 1905, the toren had a petroleumlight and was the brightness 24,000 cd. This light was replaced in 1911, by a incandescent lamp what ensured that the brightness multiplied by five. In November 1923 it was electrified and replaced by a 80V Brandarislamp. Now the brightness became more than 3 millions candela. In May 1940 the lens of this toren was broken by the Dutch Navy, which savage prevented that the duitsers used the lighthouse for navigation. After the war in June 1945 a subsidiary light was placed, which was replaced on 28 May 1952 by the lens that came from cocrete lighthouse of Ouddorp. This tower was blown up on 5 May 1945 but the lens had already been brought to safety.
