The construction of the two highways, I-89 and I-91, in White River began in 1964, and was completed in 1966. These two bridges span over the White River between White River Junction and Wilder. When the bridges were built they were the longest bridges in Vermont. An estimated 5 million pounds of structural steel was required for the long bridge. The elevation of the bridge required special cranes to lift the giant girders into position. Iroquois Indians, from the Caughnawaga Reservation just south of Montreal, were engaged for the steel work. These Indians have no fear of height and are specialist in high-level construction. Sixteen Caughnawagas were employed. The bridge was completed in November of 1967. #Bridge #Hartford #Interstate_Bridge #White_River_Junction
