Extreme Redesign Submission Description
The Elephant’s Pendant

This design is a pendant/necklace with designs of elephant heads around the sides. There are four different elephant heads, in each of the four principal directions; North, South, East, and West. Inside the cavity of the pendant there are two circles with two unique clock hands which do not turn. The two elephants on the sides are facing to the side, while the elephants on the top and bottom are facing to the front. The idea came about when I designed the pendant and clock hands first, based off of a show. The design looked interesting, and I wondered if I could place some sort of shape branching off of the side outwards. That is when I had the idea of having animals on the sides. I knew that jewelry has had animals on them before, so I decided to try it. My favorite animal is the elephant because of their intelligence, calm demeanor, caringness, and their majestic size. I wanted to pay tribute to these beautiful animals, and with some species being endangered they must be acknowledged and helped. My design represents the the beauty of wildlife and elephants, their evolution, their presence everywhere in the world, and their time left. The elegance of the pendant and the shapes of the elephant heads represent the majesty of these animals and the beauty of them and wildlife everywhere. The four different elephant heads are symbols of the animal’s evolution. They represent the different forms the elephant and its relatives have taken throughout history and time, such as the wooly mammoth, mastodon, and african elephant. The heads being situated in the four principle directions also has a meaning. They represent how the elephant reaches all directions and thus all places, and its influence affects all people no matter how big or small. Take for example Lawrence Anthony, author of the book The Elephant Whisperer, and known by the same name. He opted to help a violent herd of elephants and lived with them to calm their anger towards humans. He was successful, but died on March 2, 2012. His herd of elephants lumbered in procession to his home where they stayed for two days to pay homage to their dear friend. This showcases the connection and influence of these animals, where they inspired someone enough to help them reach a calm place and therefore payed respects to the man who helped them. The clock hands represent the time the elephants have spent on this earth and the amount they have left. They are being poached less and less, but their environment must kept undisturbed and poachers stopped. My goal with this design is to help people realize the majesty and beauty of these animals and wildlife, and that the time of these things is limited. We must help preserve these animals and help them to prolong their stay in Earth. I hope when people see this pendant, they think of the beauty elephants as well, as wildlife, hold and that they must do what they can to save them.
