In 1837, Mr John Tevelein was shipwrecked on Tasmania's north coast whilst traveling to Sydney to found a saddlery business. The survivours were taken to Launceston where he decided to stay and build this single story building to house his shop. Around the 1880s, a two story Victorian terrace was added to the original building and shares the same walls (which is why they have been modeled as one). The greatest change came in 1911 when the original Georgian facade, similar to that of the nearby Kangaroo Inn on Wellington Street, was rebuilt in the Edwardian style that still adorns the building's facade to this day. The building has been repainted on many occasions which may lead to some contentions with older imagery, the current scheme is up-to-date as of January 2012.
