After the merger of McDonnell Douglas and Boeing, Boeing halted the MD-90 program and withdrew all MD personnel from its Chinese partner, Shanghai Aircraft Manufacturing Company (SAMC). As the aviation market bloomed, the Chinese needs a cheaper domestic alternative to the 737NGs and A320s to fulfil its mushrooming demand for a domestic airliner. Based on the leftovers of MD, SAMC decided to revive the MD-90. It collaborated with Antonov and Aviadvigatel to develop flight controls, electronics, and a derated scaled-down variant of the powerful PS-90A2 engine to be adapted to reengineered MD-83 fuselage, producing a maximum thrust of 125kN each and equipped with the classic clamshell thrust reverser. The brand new aircraft is branded as the COMAC C818 and was introduced in 2014, being the second product of the newly formed company after the ARJ21, a regional jet also based on the DC-9. Thanks Mr G the Sheep for the Tu-204, Mabrick Rocha for the MD-80 and Maurice Becker for the MD-83.
